What is a gestoría?
You’ve seen this word on a sign, a business card, or in one of our articles, and you’re wondering what it actually means. A gestoría (the professional who runs one is called a gestor or gestora) is a profession specific to Spain, with no exact equivalent in English — which is why we keep the Spanish word rather than force an approximate translation that would be misleading.
What a gestor does
A gestor handles everyday administrative tasks with the Spanish authorities: routine tax filings, vehicle registration or ownership transfers, social security paperwork, and various administrative filings. Think of it as a generalist for paperwork — the person you call so things move forward without having to understand every form yourself.
What a gestor doesn’t do
A gestor is not a tax advisor (no strategic advice on optimising your tax situation), not a lawyer (no court representation, no complex legal advice), and not a property manager (not to be confused with a « gestor de comunidad » or « administrador de fincas », who manages shared buildings — a completely different job despite the similar-sounding name).
When to consult a gestor
Whenever you have a recurring Spanish administrative task and would rather hand it off than learn to navigate the system yourself — most self-employed people and small businesses in Spain, expat or not, have one on retainer for their routine filings.
