What is a geometra?
You’ve come across this word while looking for help with a property purchase or renovation project in Italy, and you’re wondering what it actually means. A geometra is a profession specific to Italy, with no exact equivalent in English — which is why we keep the Italian word rather than force an approximate translation that would be misleading.
A useful quirk: the word never changes
One thing worth knowing before you go any further: « geometra » stays exactly the same whether you’re talking about a man or a woman — there’s no separate word. Italian marks the gender only through the article (il geometra for a man, la geometra for a woman), but the word itself never changes. Handy to know before you find yourself guessing out loud in front of one.
What a geometra does
A geometra works in two fairly distinct contexts, worth keeping apart. For a property purchase, they carry out land surveys, boundary checks and cadastral compliance verification — essentially a technical inspection role. For construction or renovation, a qualified geometra can design and oversee « modest » masonry work (buildings up to three storeys, with no complex reinforced concrete) — closer to an architect’s role, but for smaller-scale projects.
What a geometra doesn’t do
Beyond three storeys, or for anything involving complex reinforced concrete, the law requires an architect (architetto) or an engineer (ingegnere) — a geometra isn’t authorised to sign off on those projects. Nor are they a notary: they don’t draft the final sale deed, even though they’re often involved earlier on with technical checks on the property.
When to consult a geometra
Before a property purchase, to confirm that what’s on the ground actually matches what the land registry and the permits say — a particularly important check in Italy, where unregistered changes or extensions on older buildings are common. Or for a modest-scale construction or renovation project, where their input is both competent and usually more affordable than an architect’s.
